Spreadsheet Hierarchies

COBie sheets relate to each other through established hierarchies. These are generally categorized into three primary levels: Spatial, Equipment, and Common.

I. SPATIAL

This hierarchy defines the physical breakdown of the project. A single Facility contains multiple Floors, and each floor contains various Spaces (rooms or areas).

Note on Zones: Zones are independent of this hierarchy. A single Zone (e.g., a fire compartment) can encompass multiple facilities, floors, or spaces.

COBie Spatial Hierarchy: Facility > Floor > Space

II. EQUIPMENT

This level defines the assets within the facility. An Equipment Type serves as the template for multiple Components (individual instances).

Note on Systems: Systems are independent. A single System (e.g., HVAC) can contain a variety of different types and components working together.

III. COMMON

These elements do not follow a rigid hierarchy but grow as the project progresses. For example, Contacts evolve from design-phase consultants to construction-phase manufacturers and suppliers.
